Is Grace Enough? Breaking free from performance-based faith and learning to rest in what Jesus already finished

Many believers often feel a quiet pressure weighing on them. They might ask themselves, “Am I doing enough?”
This question revolves around whether they are doing enough to make God happy, to grow in their faith, or to simply be seen as acceptable.

When they don’t meet their own expectations (and it’s common to fall short), a nagging thought can emerge: “Maybe I just need to work harder.”
As a result, they might:
Pray more often
Read more religious texts
Make an effort to improve their behaviour
Yet, despite all these efforts, it can still feel like it’s not quite enough.
Where This Pressure Comes From
Many of us haven't been taught this directly, but over time, we often start to believe it: our relationship with God depends on how well we perform. Because of this mindset, even after we've accepted salvation, we might find ourselves acting as if:
We have something to prove.
We could lose our standing with God.
We need to keep trying to earn God's approval.
However, the Bible offers a very different view on this matter.
What Grace Actually Means
The book of Ephesians provides a straightforward explanation: “You have been saved by grace through faith.” Grace means several important things:
You didn’t do anything to deserve it.
There’s nothing you can do to earn it.
You don’t need to do anything to keep it.
Grace is a gift given to you. It’s given fully, freely, and completely.
You Are Not on Probation With God
Take a moment to think about this. Here’s what you’re not facing:
You’re not being judged all the time.
You’re not just one mistake away from being rejected.
You’re not only valued on your best days.
If your connection with God is rooted in grace, then your relationship with Him is strong and stable. It’s not something that can easily fall apart.

If you’ve ever felt like your relationship with God depends on how well you perform… this is for you.
🎧 Grace Over Grind: Ending the Performance Review with God
In this episode from the Rebuilding from the Roots series, we walk through Ephesians 2:8–10 and gently dismantle the pressure of performance-based faith.
We talk about:
The difference between being saved by works vs saved for works
Why we slip into “maintenance mode” in our walk with God
What it means to be God’s poiema—His intentional, unhurried masterpiece
This isn’t about trying harder.
It’s about returning to the truth that grace isn’t just where you start…
It’s what sustains you—especially on your messiest days.
Signs You Might Be Living in Performance-Based Faith
Sometimes, the signs can be quite subtle.
Here are a few things to look out for:
1. You feel closer to God on your good days
2. You feel distant after making a mistake
3. You judge your faith by how consistent you are rather than your connection with God
4. You experience pressure instead of peace in your relationship with God
If any of these sound familiar, don’t worry…
This doesn’t mean you’re doing your faith wrong. It simply means you might be carrying a burden that you were never meant to bear.
Grace Changes How You Live
Grace doesn’t make you weak or inactive. Instead, it gives you a sense of security.
When you feel secure:
You obey from love, not fear
You grow from identity, not pressure
You pursue God without striving
You’re no longer trying to earn what’s already yours.
You Can Rest Now
Here’s the change in perspective:
Instead of living your life just to gain acceptance from others, you should live your life based on the acceptance you already have. This shift in mindset can make a huge difference.
