Why You Need a 2-Minute Nighttime Devotional (And How the Quiet Nights Series Makes It Easy)



When we talk about spending time with God, almost everyone pictures the same thing — a quiet morning, a hot cup of coffee, an open Bible, the sun coming up. Morning devotionals are everywhere. They're written about, talked about, sold, taught, and built into nearly every Christian routine you'll find online.


But nighttime? Nobody talks about nighttime.


And yet nighttime is when most of us are actually struggling. It's when the day finally lands on us, when our brain decides to replay every conversation we wish had gone differently, when tomorrow's worries arrive uninvited and refuse to leave. It's when we scroll past the point of being tired because we don't know how else to wind down.


We don't end our days with God. We end them exhausted, distracted, and carrying the full weight of everything we never put down.


That's exactly why I created the Quiet Nights series. And it's why I think a 2-minute nighttime devotional might be the most overlooked spiritual practice you'll ever build into your life.


Why Mornings Get All the Attention (And Why That's a Problem)

There's a reason morning devotionals are the default. The thinking goes something like this — start your day with God, and the rest of it will follow. Fill your cup before you pour out. Get fed in the morning so you can show up well for everyone you'll meet that day.


All of that is true. There is nothing wrong with morning time with God.


But here's the part we miss: a day that starts with God can still end with worry, scrolling, racing thoughts, and a brain that won't shut off. Because what we do in the morning sets our heart in motion, but what we do at night decides how we rest.


And rest matters more than we give it credit for. It's where God restores what the day took out of us in ways we don't always see while it's happening. Psalm 4:8 says, "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety." That kind of peace doesn't just happen. It's something we make room for.


What Happens When We Don't Close the Day With God

You already know the feeling. You climb into bed exhausted, certain you'll fall asleep the second your head hits the pillow, and then it starts. The mental replay of everything you didn't finish, the conversation that bothered you, the thing your child said that you couldn't shake, the thing you wish you hadn't said yourself.


You toss. You scroll a little to distract yourself. You finally drift off, but your dreams are restless, your sleep is shallow, and you wake up still carrying the weight of the day before.

This isn't a personality flaw. It's what happens when we never actually set the day down.


Our minds don't decompress on their own. Closed eyes don't quiet a noisy heart, and changing into pajamas doesn't lighten anything we picked up over the course of the day — it all follows us right into bed.


The thing we need most before sleep is the very thing we keep forgetting to do: hand the day back to the God who held us through it.


Introducing Quiet Nights — A Nightly Devotional Reel Series

Quiet Nights is a short nightly devotional reel series that lives on Instagram, posting Monday through Friday at 8:30 to 9 PM all month long in June. Each reel is under one minute and exists for one reason — to help you slow down, spend a quiet moment with God, and settle your mind before bed.

Every reel follows the same simple rhythm. It opens with the Quiet Nights title and that day's topic alongside a Scripture verse, giving you a moment to read and breathe before anything is said. The reflection then plays as a short spoken word over a calm visual background — honest, conversational, and gentle enough for the end of a long day. The reel closes with the day's prayer on screen while it's read aloud, giving you something to carry into sleep.

The topics are pulled straight from the real things people wrestle with at night. Racing thoughts. Letting go of the day. Fear about tomorrow. Loneliness. Feeling like you didn't measure up. Each one is approached gently, with the goal of leaving you more settled than when you started. No heavy theology. No pressure. Just a quiet moment with God before you close your eyes.


Why 2 Minutes Is Actually Enough

There's something about the word "devotional" that makes a lot of us flinch — especially at night. We picture ourselves sitting up in bed with a Bible and a journal, fighting to stay awake and trying to focus on a long passage when our brains are already done for the day.


Quiet Nights was built specifically to remove that pressure.


Two minutes is doable when you're exhausted, when the kids are finally asleep, when you just got off a long shift, or when your eyes are already half-closed. And here's the thing — what you do consistently for two minutes a night will shape you more deeply than what you do once a week for an hour.


Consistency is what builds spiritual muscle memory. And nighttime — when your defences are down, your day is behind you, and your heart is at its most honest — is one of the most powerful times to meet with God.


How to Follow Along

The series starts June 1 and runs every weeknight at 8:30–9 PM on Instagram. Set a soft reminder on your phone, turn off the other apps when it buzzes, and let that one minute be the bookend on your day.


If you miss a night, don't stress about it. Catch up the next morning, watch two in a row, or simply pick back up the following evening. The point isn't perfection — it's building a rhythm of ending your day with God instead of ending it with a scroll.

The reels run throughout June, but that doesn't mean the series ends. After June, you'll always be able to go back on Instagram and watch the replays whenever you need them — whether that's weeks later or months down the road.
