How to Spend Time with God as a Busy Mom (Even When You Feel Too Overwhelmed)

If you’ve been scrolling through your mental to-do list while wondering…

  • How do I actually spend time with God as a busy mom?

  • Why does my quiet time feel so inconsistent lately?

  • Is a three-minute prayer even "enough" for Him?

You are not alone.

Most mothers don’t struggle with a lack of desire to spend time with God. They struggle with how to actually do it in a life that rarely slows down long enough to catch a breath. Between the middle-of-the-night wakeups, the constant noise, and the heavy mental load, it can feel like your spiritual life is always the thing that gets pushed to “later.”

And then comes the guilt. That nagging feeling that you’re not disciplined enough or that your relationship with God is falling behind.

But what if the issue isn't your heart? What if it’s the impossible expectation you’ve been trying to meet?

What the Bible Actually Says About Finding God in the Chaos

Before we talk about the how, let’s anchor ourselves in the truth. God has never required a perfect, Pinterest-worthy setup to meet with Him.

James 4:8 gives us a beautiful, simple promise:

"Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you."

He doesn’t say "Draw near once the house is quiet" or "Draw near when you finally have your life together." He just says: Draw near. Even in the small ways. Even in the messy, imperfect moments.

In Luke 10:41–42, when Martha was overwhelmed by the weight of her responsibilities, Jesus didn't scold her for having a lot to do. He gently reminded her: "You are worried and troubled about many things, but one thing is needed."

He wasn't asking her to ignore her chores; He was inviting her to re-center her heart. Intimacy with God was never meant to be another heavyweight on your shoulders. It’s meant to be the place where that weight finally lifts.

Why It Feels So Hard in This Season

Let’s be honest: the barrier isn't just a lack of minutes on the clock. It’s mental exhaustion. It’s the constant interruptions and the pressure of presence over performance.

Even when you finally sit down, your mind is often still running through grocery lists and schedules. You might think, "I'm not getting anything out of this," and decide to just try again tomorrow.

But a deeper relationship with God isn’t built on perfect focus. It’s built on the humble act of returning to Him, over and over again, right in the middle of the mess.

5 Practical Ways to Move Toward "Faith Slowed Down"

These aren’t idealistic goals; they are real, doable rhythms for intentional Christian living that you can start today.

  1. Start with one verse, not a full chapter. Instead of feeling like you have to master a whole book of the Bible, sit with one truth. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet." You don’t need the whole path lit up today—just enough light for the very next step.

  2. Anchor your time to an existing routine. Don't wait for a "new" pocket of time. Pair your prayer with something you already do: while the coffee brews, during the afternoon nap, or in those few minutes in the car before you walk into the house. This is how faith becomes woven into your life, not separated from it.

  3. Pray honestly, not perfectly. God isn't waiting for a polished speech. Romans 8:26 reminds us that the Spirit helps us in our weakness. Sometimes the most "holy" prayer you can offer is: "God, I’m exhausted... but I’m here."

  4. Release the pressure to "feel" something every time. Some days will feel like a mountaintop; others will feel like just another Tuesday. Both are valid. Faith beyond religion is built on trust, not just emotions. You are still growing, even when you don't feel the "spark."

  5. Choose consistency over length. Five minutes of scripture-based reflection every day is more transformative than an hour once a month. Small, consistent moments build a lasting intimacy that fits your real life.

You’re Not Behind—You’re Just in a Season

It’s easy to look back at your "pre-mom" self and feel like you're failing. But God isn't asking you to go backward. He is inviting you into spiritual healing right where you are today.

In your current capacity. In your current season. And this season counts.

Reflection: A Moment of Honesty

  • What has been the biggest barrier to your time with God lately?

  • Which one of the 5 steps above feels most "doable" for you today?

  • What would change if you stopped striving for "perfect" and simply chose to be "present"?

A Prayer for the Busy Mom

God, You see the fullness of my days and the weight of the load I carry. Help me to release the pressure to do everything perfectly and instead draw near to You in simple, honest ways. Teach me how to meet You in my real life—not the life I wish I had. Remind me that every small moment matters and that You are always near. Even here. Amen.
