Feeling Stuck in Your Growth

It can be really discouraging when it seems like you're not making much progress. It's not about experiencing a huge failure or a complete breakdown; it's more about that nagging feeling that you're just... stuck.

You care about your faith. You're putting in the effort. You've picked up new insights and made some healing strides in your life. Yet, somehow, you find yourself facing the same fears, reacting in the same ways, and struggling with issues you thought you had already overcome. It can feel like you've hit a wall, as if this is the limit of your growth.

If you're not careful, that feeling can start to morph into a belief: Maybe God is done with me.

But Philippians 1:6 gently addresses that misconception.

“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Paul speaks with certainty, not optimism. His confidence comes not from the people involved, but from the fact that God is reliable.

If you feel stuck right now, it doesn’t mean that the Builder has abandoned the work. Often, the most crucial progress takes place beneath the surface

When the Site Looks Messy

Every construction project goes through a phase where it looks worse before it gets better.

To someone who isn’t familiar with building, an early-stage construction site can seem chaotic. There’s broken ground, tools scattered everywhere, and foundations that are exposed. It doesn’t look like a home at all. However, for the architect, this messy stage is crucial. It’s the time when the important structural elements are put in place, ensuring that everything will be stable in the future.

Spiritual growth is similar.

We often think that progress should look neat and straightforward. But real transformation is complicated. It involves revisiting past hurts with a fresh perspective and dealing with familiar challenges on a deeper level. What might feel like a setback is actually a process of integration — it’s God reinforcing your foundation so you can grow even stronger.

God isn’t frustrated with how fast you’re moving. He’s not watching the clock or surprised by the areas where you still need to grow.

You are not behind. You are simply in the process of becoming.

The Difference Between Striving and Surrender

This is where many people feel overwhelmed — right in the messy middle of their journey.

Striving sounds like this: “I have to fix this. I need to work harder. I must improve so that God can finally use me.” This mindset puts all the pressure of change on you. It suggests that God is just watching your efforts instead of actively shaping your heart.

Surrender, on the other hand, expresses a different idea.

Surrender says, “I trust the hands that are shaping me.”

This doesn’t mean being inactive. It’s more about being in the right position. Think of clay on a pottery wheel; surrender keeps you balanced, flexible, and aware, even when things get tough. Sometimes, the Potter applies more pressure not to harm the clay but to make it stronger. At other times, He breaks it down to eliminate air pockets that could cause it to crack later on.

To the clay, this might feel like destruction. But to the Potter, it’s an act of mercy.

The most significant changes God makes in you often go unnoticed by others. In fact, you might not even see them yourself until much later.

Your Life is a Journey, Not Just a Moment

One of the biggest mistakes we make is judging our whole lives based on just one moment.

It could be a tough week, a difficult conversation, or a time when you feel stuck. But remember, God doesn’t define you by any single event.

He sees the bigger picture — where you began, what challenges you’ve faced, what lessons you’ve learned, and where He’s guiding you next. That feeling of being stuck is not the end; it’s just a part of your journey.

Every good story has a middle section where things don’t quite make sense. It’s the part where growth feels slow, and the main character wonders if anything is really changing.

If you stopped the story there, you would miss out on the resolution. God hasn’t turned away from your journey; He’s still writing your story.

Trusting the One Who Completes the Work

Philippians 1:6 reminds us that it’s not up to you to finish what you’ve started. The responsibility lies with Him.

You don’t have to complete everything on your own. You don’t need to hurry through the process, and you’re not expected to understand every step along the way. Your job isn’t to make everything perfect; it’s simply to stay in His hands.

And that is more than enough.

A Gentle Next Step

If this surfaced frustration, impatience, or weariness — don’t rush past it.

Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is sit quietly with God and let Him remind you that He is still working.
