There's a unique kind of exhaustion that stems from a faith that persists but no longer feels vibrant.
You believe. You attend. You strive for consistency. Yet, at some point, your connection with God starts to feel less like a flame and more like upkeep—something you maintain to ensure it doesn't fail when needed.
This is the result of faith gradually becoming functional.
We often don't realize it's happening. Faith turns into something we do rather than Someone we know. We read Scripture for practicality. We pray for results. We participate, serve, give—and quietly hope that it will make life a bit smoother.
But a functional faith is draining, because you can sustain something without ever loving it.
From the start, faith was never intended to be a system. It was meant to be a relationship.
When God Becomes a Tool Instead of a Person

We live in a world that values efficiency. We look for steps, systems, and solutions. It's no surprise that we sometimes approach the Bible in the same way—seeking quick fixes, immediate understanding, or just enough spiritual sustenance to get us through the week.
Yet, when God is treated as a product rather than a Person, something vital is missing from our spirituality.
Genesis 1:27 shows that we were created in God's image. This truth isn't merely about value—it's about design. You were made to reflect a relational God. Before anything existed, there was communion. Father, Son, and Spirit—relationship has always been fundamental.
You weren't created to run religious programs. You were made for with-ness.
When we overlook this design, we feel its absence. Life may seem full on the outside, but internally there's a quiet longing—as if you're busy, faithful, even productive… but not truly connected.

The Exhaustion of Working for a “Boss”
Many of us fail to notice when the shift happens—but suddenly, we're no longer walking with a Father. Instead, we're working under a Boss.
Prayer becomes a task. Scripture turns into a requirement. Church becomes a platform for performance.
These activities aren't inherently wrong. They serve as valuable tools. However, when tools replace intimacy, the harmony is lost.
I've had moments when my spiritual life seemed impressive on paper. I was consistent, fluent in the language, and actively engaged. Yet, if asked whether I enjoyed being with God, I would have found it difficult to answer.
Working for God is the fastest path to burnout. Walking with God is where true rest begins.
A boss evaluates performance. A father welcomes presence.
You Don’t Have to Clean Up to Be Close
One of the biggest misconceptions that hinders relationships is the belief that you must be "ready" before approaching God.
We wait until we feel calm, until the house is quiet, or until our thoughts seem more spiritual.

However, genuine relationships don't grow through pretending.
Consider the person who knows you best—the one you can call when everything is falling apart. You don't rehearse your words for them, nor do you tidy yourself up first. Intimacy is based on honesty, not presentation.
God created you, aware of every messy detail. He isn't surprised by your boredom, distraction, or weariness.
If your faith feels flat right now, there's nothing wrong with you. You are simply meant for more than a checklist.
Rebuilding From the Roots
Faith develops similarly to how trees do—from the roots upward.
When the fruit appears withered, the answer isn’t to exert more effort on the surface. It’s to nurture what’s beneath. To reconnect with relationship. To cease striving and begin resting.
This week, instead of pursuing the “perfect” quiet time, aim for a genuine one.
Converse with God while driving. Share with Him when Scripture seems dry. Allow Him to be present during the laundry, the commute, and the long nights when sleep is elusive.
You weren’t made to function for God. You were made to be with Him.
