The Gift of Being Not Enough

Prefer to listen? Press play above! Prefer to read? Keep scrolling! There’s a certain kind of tiredness that doesn’t come from doing too much.

This kind of tiredness comes from holding on for too long. It’s about being strong enough to keep going, to hold everything together, and to put on a smile even when you feel completely drained inside.

If you’ve been carrying that weight—especially in your faith—I want to say something clearly and kindly:

You don’t have to have everything figured out for God to be there for you.

It doesn’t have to be the perfect version of you. It doesn't have to be the version that seems emotionally stable or spiritually impressive. Just be your true self.

When Strength Becomes a Burden

At some point, many of us came to believe that God prefers our strength.

We envision that He is most pleased with discipline, consistency, and composure. With early mornings and well-organized prayers. With the version of us that appears capable, resilient, and calm.

So we present God with our good days. We wait to pray until we’ve calmed down. We postpone showing up until we feel less emotional, less messy, less exposed.

Without realizing it, we transform our relationship with God into a quiet performance review.

But if you only invite God into the spaces you’ve tidied up, you miss the miracle of Him being with you in the chaos.

How much energy are you expending daily to maintain the “strong version” of yourself, while your soul is quietly pleading for rest?

The Thorn That Changed Everything

The apostle Paul knew what it was like to look strong on the outside while struggling with pain on the inside.

In 2 Corinthians 12, he openly talks about a "thorn"—a constant, unresolved issue that bothered him so much that he asked God to take it away. He didn't just ask once; he pleaded with God multiple times.

Like many of us, Paul thought he would be more effective and faithful if God would just remove what made him feel weak. But God's answer changed everything for him and for all of humanity.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

It's not about ignoring weakness or avoiding it; it's about embracing it. God didn't wait for Paul to become strong. He met Paul right in the middle of his feelings of inadequacy.

Why We Hide the Cracks

If God's strength really helps us when we're feeling weak, why is it so hard to accept our vulnerabilities? It's because being vulnerable can feel like a big risk.

We live in a world that prizes control, skill, and keeping it together. As a result, we often hide our tiredness by staying busy. We mask our fears by using spiritual terms.

We often cover up our weaknesses by staying busy and productive. However, grace comes to us when we are at our lowest points, much like water that fills the deepest areas. If we use all our energy to pretend that we have it all together, we miss out on what God truly wants to give us.

I've felt this myself. During tough times like losing someone, facing health issues, and dealing with grief, I tried to fix my broken heart by relying on my "strong faith." I kept up my usual routines and said the same things, but nothing felt real. It wasn’t that God was far away; I was just too tired from pretending that I was okay.

When I finally stopped trying to appear holy and simply said, “God, I have nothing left,” I didn’t get all the answers I was looking for. Instead, I found a sense of being supported, and that made all the difference.

Weakness Doesn't Mean You're Disqualified

Paul makes a surprising point: he actually takes pride in his weaknesses.

He doesn’t enjoy suffering; instead, he understands that something meaningful is happening in those moments. His weaknesses became a way for God’s presence to enter his life. Where he felt weak, Christ’s strength filled the gap.

You don’t have to fix your weaknesses before bringing them to God. You don’t need to describe them in religious terms or justify them in any way.

Feeling inadequate isn’t a setback; it’s an opportunity.
